Heard about granitas? Granitas are a blended drink that remains somewhat grainy in texture due to the sugar content which prevents the liquid from freezing solid. You can get them made with tea or coffee. Think you can't make them at home? Here's how to do it! Start with this basic recipe - one 12 oz can frozen concentrated lemonade, 36 oz cold tea. Mix well and freeze in ice cube trays. This is the basis for tea granitas without all the sugar found in commercial granita mixes. Look below for the recipe for basic coffee granita mix.

Black cherry lemon tea granita - 1 oz black cherry syrup, 1/2 cup cold tea, 7 lemon tea ice cubes - in a blender, mix all til smooth. Cherry Almond Granita - 3/4 oz cherry syrup, 1/4 oz almond or amaretto syrup, 1/2 cup cold tea, 7 lemon tea ice cubes, blend all til smooth, garnish with a cherry. Mango Granita - 1 oz mango syrup, 1/2 cup cold tea, 7 lemon tea ice cubes, blend til smooth. Very refreshing on a hot day!

Mix 8 oz espresso with 6 oz water and freeze in ice cube trays. Seven of these cubes mixed with 2/3 cup water and blended til smooth (sweetened if necessary) make a basic homestyle coffee granita. You can also use half and half or 2% milk instead of the water for a richer drink.

Chocolate Banana Granita - 1 1/2 oz chocolate syrup and 1 oz Banana syrup, 7 granita cubes, blend til smooth and garnish with a slice of banana.
